Today in the AT&T Classroom the students continued work on their Augmented Reality projects. Augmented Reality (AR) refers to tools that extend the physical world to include components of the virtual world. With augmented reality, the user is augmenting their physical world by adding layers of media that pop-up when the user is in a specific location and/or scans objects with a phone or tablet.
The Lakeview fifth graders are using the CoSpaces EDU coding platform to create 3D augmented reality holograms that represent various planets they studied and researched in science. Once they complete the programming, the students will project their hologram onto a MERGE Cube to explore their planet in Augmented Reality. The MERGE Cube is a holographic cube that allows children to physically hold and interact with 3D objects using AR technology. Each side of the cube has a distinct pattern known as glyphs which serve as a trigger and allow the students’ coding to activate when pointed at the cube. MERGE Cubes can be purchased at Walmart and online. In the AT&T Classroom, the students are using a printable template that can be downloaded at no cost and then assembled to function as MERGE Cube.
