Streetsboro Third Graders Co-Design App with Kent State Faculty

This morning in the AT&T Classroom the third graders had an exciting opportunity to participate in the design of an app for practicing cursive writing. The app is being developed by a team of Kent State faculty from Visual Communication Design and the School of Information. This morning faculty members Gretchen Rinnert and Marianne Martens led a co-design activity with the third graders. The faculty first showed the students an example of a similar app, Energetic Alpha, an app Kent State faculty created for identifying and writing print letters.

Next, the students were given a printed template of an iPad screen along with markers and stickers
to design their own prototype for start screens, levels, and badges/rewards.

Later this morning students worked with the Educreations app to create digital stories incorporating facts they learned from their recent research on U.S. Presidents.,
Educreations is a free app that allows a tablet or iPad to record the student’s voice and his/her writing
and drawing which can be saved for playback and/or shared online.
Within the Educreations app, the students used the app’s drawing tools to create an illustration of
their President. The students also used the app’s audio recorder to record themselves sharing
important facts about their U.S. President.
