Campers in this week’s Immersive Design Tools camp are exploring tools and apps for augmented reality and virtual reality. Augmented reality (AR) refers to the use of technology to create an enhanced version of reality by overlaying virtual objects on an image or a real-world environment. In contrast, virtual reality (VR) refers to the use of technology to create a simulated/artificial digital environment. Yesterday campers used the Quiver augmented reality app to create 3D animated scenes. The Quiver app combines layers of digital content with the actual environment using the camera feature on the tablet’s device, creating an enhanced reality on the tablet’s screen. Campers selected from themed/topical sets of pages that could be printed and then colored. Using the iPads, the campers opened the Quiver app, held the iPad camera over the coloring page and then used the camera to scan their colored picture. The campers could then bring their picture to life utilizing animations built into the app.
This morning campers had the experience of creating virtual reality media using the Google Cardboard Camera app, a free app available for iOS and Android phones. Camper went out on campus and used the app to capture three-dimensional panoramas. Back in the AT&T Classroom, campers used Google Cardboard goggles to view the virtual reality scenes created with their photos.
