Campers Explore 3D Modeling and Printing

This afternoon in the AT&T Classroom campers explored 3D Slash modeling software for designing 3D printable projects. The 3D Slash interface offers a set of tools that children can use to build and modify 3D models by adding or subtracting a variety of cube shapes. The campers found the interface to be very intuitive and highly engaging. In addition to it’s ease of use, the tool is also very open-ended and adaptable for a range of ages and varying levels of technology expertise. It is a wonderful tool for encouraging children’s creativity and design thinking as well as building skills for scale modeling, prototyping, and problem-solving. Later this afternoon the campers also explored two iOS apps for 3D printing -- Makerbot Printshop and ThinkMaker Design . Both apps offer templates that children can use for customizing and printing figurines, creatures, medallions, and jewelry. Defer Intermediate Students Embark on Moon Survival Mission

This afternoon in the AT&T Classroom Mrs. Spence launched a space mission challenge with the Defer Intermediate fifth graders. As part of their study of the solar system, the fifth graders have been given the challenge to travel toward the Moon via the Orion spacecraft in the year 2025. Working in teams of four, each “crew” must develop a survival plan that includes items that will help the crew survive. Additionally, the crew must consider research from NASA experts and provide justification for the selection of the items in their crew’s survival plan. Before embarking on their mission, Captain Spence cautioned the space crews that their survival depends upon their ability to work cooperatively as a team to select the most useful items for their survival plan and to determine how the items will be used to survive on the moon. RCET Hosts Summer Preschool Technology Camp in the AT&T Classroom

This past week RCET collaborated with the Kent State Child Development Center to offer a summer technology camp for preschoolers in the AT&T Classroom. The camp was designed to provide preschoolers with opportunities to explore a variety of developmentally appropriate digital tools within the context of interactive media activities. A primary focus of the camp was on how various digital tools can be used with young children to: encourage language and communication use stimulate the creative process facilitate interaction promote development of early literacy skills Across the week the children used several apps to create stories and animations including Toontastics , PuppetPals , & Sock Puppets .
