Carlin 2nd Graders Use Digital Tools for Daily 5

This morning during their literacy block in the AT&T Classroom, the Carlin second graders wrote acrostic poems using Google Docs. An acrostic poem is one that uses the letters in a word to begin each line of the poem. All lines of the poem relate to or describe the main topic word. Miss Wise created a Google Doc template that guided the students in drafting a poem using the letters to spell Mrs. Oesch with the poem focusing on words to describe Mrs. Oesch. Miss Wise led the class in a pre-writing activity in which the students brainstormed adjectives and nouns describing Mrs. Oesch and then each student accessed the template in their Google Classroom.

Also during their literacy block, the students used the QR Code Reader app to access digital stories for Listen to Reading and also introduced to Scholastic’s Listen & Read website for Read to Self. Listen & Read is an interactive website designed for young readers.  The site offers several free nonfiction books that include text for Read to Self and audio narration for Listen to Reading. The books cover topics related to community workers, animals, the US President. Each book includes a short quiz so that the reader can check their understanding when finished.
