Giggle Poetry is a resource site accessible at the Poetry Teachers website offering access to over 16 categories of poems for children. Students are able to rate the poems they read and view ratings from other readers. Many of the poems include comments from the author regarding what inspired them to write the poem. Today in the AT&T Classroom the third graders selected a poem from the Giggle Poetry website for reading practice. Students inserted the poem’s text in Google Docs where they used several of the Google Docs tools for annotating words and passages to cue them to use appropriate intonation, rhythm, and pace. Annotating text is an important strategy for supporting student’s literacy development as they interact with the text by marking important words and passages, identify key vocabulary and select words that require emphasis or expression.
