This morning in the AT&T Classroom the Willyard fourth graders were introduced to blogging for mathematical writing. The term Blog is short for Web Log and refers to an online space where a user can share information by posting text, images, audio, or video. Today the students learned to use Blogger, a free blogging tool accessible through the Google Apps for Education Domain (GAFE). Each student used Blogger to create their own math blog where they will reply to mathematical writing prompts posted by Ms. Fortson.
Having students keep a math blog provides important opportunities for students to reflect on their learning while also prompting them to provide evidence to explain their thinking and formulate conclusions. Additionally, writing about math also supports students’ development of skills for mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and communication.
