Fifth Graders Explore Math App Candy Depot

This afternoon in the AT&T Classroom the fifth graders welcomed Dr. Karl Kosko, Kent State Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education. Dr. Kosko introduced the students to Candy Depot on the iPads.  Candy Depot is an iOS app designed to help students learn to construct fractions and develop algebra readiness. The app was developed as an educational game by the Learning Transformation Research Group at Virginia Tech and is available for free at the iTunes store for use on the iPad. The game supports students’ development of units coordination, fractions and algebra readiness by engaging them as employees at a “Candy Depot” where they are involved  in tasks involving combinations of bars, bundles, and boxes. The goal of the game is to use these units (bars, bundles, and boxes) to satisfy customer orders accurately and efficiently.
