Second Graders Explore Digital Tools for Math

Today in the AT&T Classroom the Woodland second graders used three digital tools for focusing on math concepts and skills. Mrs. Marshall created a lesson in Zaption focused on coins and used the Coins! video from ABCMouse.com to review coin faces and values. Mrs. Marshall used Zaption  to create and insert formative assessment questions within the video lesson. The students first completed the lesson and questions individually at their computers and then came back together and went through the material as a class. Mrs. Marshall’s Zaption coin lesson can be accessed in the gallery at http://zapt.io/tawha4vm
Zaption is a web-based tool that can be used to create interactive opportunities within digital video lessons. Teachers may upload their own video, select from the Zaption library or search for online video content from sites such as YouTube, PBS, National Geographic, etc. Videos can be used in their entirety, trimmed or combined with other videos, slides, or drawings. Teachers can then create and insert questions directly in the video. Questions can encompass several different formats including open responses, multiple choice, and checkbox.

The students also learned to use Educreations for solving math problems. Educreations is a free tool that allows the computer or tablet to record the student’s voice and his/her writing and drawing which can be saved for playback. The second graders had used Educreations previously for reading fluency practice.  Today Mrs. Nichols reviewed with the students the steps for writing and drawing within the app. The students worked individually on their iPads to solve the problems and then presented their solution to their classmates by mirroring them to the presentation screen using AirPlay.

The second graders ended their afternoon session using the Butterfly Math Addition app for more addition practice. The Butterfly Math Addition app uses an interactive game-like format with increasing levels of difficulty to provide practice with addition facts. The app is available for both Android and iOS tablets.
