Campers Create Stop Motion Animations with Mixed Media

At the start of today's session, the campers were introduced to the notion of using a combination of media and materials to create a stop motion animation video. The campers viewed a few stop motion video clips that incorporated media such as hand-drawn scenes and backgrounds, paper cutout figures, clay, and figurines and then discussed the strategies for effectively combining different material types to create the stop motion effect. Planning the animation challenges kids to visually lay out a scene frame by frame so the viewer understands the story or concept as it unfolds. Working with multiple media to achieve the stop motion effect requires the designer to create numerous scenes with each scene having a very slight change in movement. The designer must also be able to shift gears between detailed planning and in the moment creative decision making.  We have been so impressed with the campers’ engagement and diligence as they create their projects!
