Today in the AT&T Classroom the Fishcreek third graders explored two new tools for coding and programming as part of their participation in the Hour of Code global initiative. Miss Fudale first introduced the Fishcreek third graders to Kahn Academy’s Hour of Drawing with Code, designed to teach students coding language to program a drawing. Kahn Academy offers several options and tools for coding and programming on their website. Miss Fudale also introduced the third graders to Scratch, a free web-based tool developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. Scratch can be used to program interactive stories, games and animations that can then be shared in the Scratch online community. It is a great tool for enhancing children’s creative and critical thinking and for encouraging collaboration.
