Rootstown Third Graders Use Digital Tools to Study Poetry

As part of their current literacy unit, the Rootstown third graders have been studying poetry. This morning in the AT&T Classroom the students practiced reading poetry aloud with fluency, rhythm, and pace, and using appropriate intonation and vocal patterns to emphasize important elements within the text. The students used Educreations for their poetry read alouds to self-assess their fluency and expression.  Educreations is a free multi-platform tool that allows the device to record the student’s voice and his/her writing and drawing which can be saved for playback and/or shared online. Within the Educreations app, the students used the camera to take a photo of the assigned passage from their book then used the app’s microphone to record themselves reading the poem aloud. The app allows the students and teacher to be able to play back & listen to the passage to assess reading fluency and expression. Educreations can also be used to create stories, animations, and multimedia projects and presentations.

Later today  the students used another tool from the ReadWriteThink.Org (RWT) website.  The RWT Theme Poems tool supports students in drafting poetry focused on a specific topic or theme. This morning the third graders used the RWT Theme Poems tool to write a poem about a season with an emphasis on including descriptive terms related to the five senses. The RWT Theme Poems tool encourages the writing process by prompting students to brainstorm, write, and revise their poems.
